Our approach, in plain words
How we work
We treat behaviour as communication, not misbehaviour to be eliminated.
That starts with understanding, not correction. Once we understand what a behaviour is doing for your child (what need it's meeting, what it's avoiding, what it's asking for), the strategies that follow are practical, specific, and sustainable long after our work together ends.
Our commitments
What we will never do
At The Behaviour Hive, we will never try to change a child or who they are.
Goals we will never set
We will never try to “make them normal” or teach them to hide the differences that make them themselves. Every child deserves to feel valued, understood, and accepted. We will never put fitting in ahead of their well-being. So our goals will always focus on what matters for the child's safety, comfort, communication, and quality of life. We will never stop harmless behaviour simply because they look different. We respect the ways children move, play, communicate, and regulate themselves.
What we never use
We will never use shame or fear to humiliate or achieve change. Our approach centres on dignity, trust, and supportive relationships.
When your child says no
We will never dismiss distress as just bad behaviour. We will take distress seriously and work to understand the demands, experiences, and unmet needs behind it.
Physical restriction
We don't use nor do we teach physical restraints.
Your child's say
We will never expect obedience at the expense of a child's voice. We support children to express their needs, ask for help, say no, and develop meaningful choices.
And we will never place all the responsibility on the child. We help the adults around them to adapt expectations, environments, and responses. Our aim is to help each child build skills, feel safer and more understood, and to participate in life in ways that are meaningful to them, while also remaining fully themselves.
Our training
Do you use ABA?
Katie is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with an MSc in Applied Behaviour Analysis from Trinity College Dublin, and a Chartered Behavioural Psychologist with the Psychological Society of Ireland.
Behaviour analysis is the science of how behaviour is learned. We use it to understand what your child's behaviour is telling you, and to build a plan that works at home and at school.
Our approach is evidence-based and neuro-affirming, grounded in Positive Behaviour Support, never about changing who your child is.
